Tips for Contractors

Proper installation of a Security or Architectural Metal Fence can be as important to the final success of the project as specifying and purchasing the correct fence. The following purchasing, installation and safety tips should help you save both time and money.

ENSURING AN ACCURATE BID

It is not uncommon for fence installation professionals to perceive one bid price as uniquely better than others, only to discover later that it wasn't an accurate "apples-to-apples" comparison. A few simple steps of preparation will help you ensure that the bids you receive accurately reflect your project's design intent.

Visiting the project site to compare plan details to field conditions will help ensure a proper take-off.

Be sure to take into account any special conditions that will affect installation, such as :

    • Core Drilling
    • Concrete Anchors
    • Concrete or Curb Cuts
    • Excavation
    • Flat Work
    • Hand Digging
    • Rock Drilling
    • Traffic Control
    • Temporary Fencing

Ensure that all relevant project details are sent - by fax, mail or e-mail - to bidding suppliers, so that you recieve an accurate material quote.

Compare quote quantities to take-off, making sure no details are missing:

    • V-track
    • Panel Hangers
    • Hinges
    • Latches
    • Specialty Hardware And all other "details" that will affect your bid and the project's successful completion

Be sure to account for any special provisions of the contract, including:

    • Required completion date
    • Penalty clauses
    • Special product specifications
    • Bonding requirements
    • Safety requirements
    • Insurance requirements
    • Sample requirements
    • And any other special - or unusual - needs or requirements.

For purposes of an "Or Equal" product substitution, be sure that the basic elements are similar enough for the architect's or owner's standards. Rarely - if ever - will the substitution be exact, but the design intent and performance qualities must be substantially similar.

BUYING THE RIGHT FENCE... AT THE RIGHT PRICE

Buy Direct From The Manufacturer

You can purchase fence materials from many sources... and just as easily be paying extra for the distribution and sales process that adds nothing to your project. Save money and gain the benefit of expertise by going straight to the source: the company that is actually creating the materials for your fence project.

Remember "Goldilocks"

As the golden-haired little girl might say, "Some fence manufacturers are too big, and some are too small?look for one that's Just Right." You will find your best results from a manufacturer/supplier that views your project as unique and important, and not just another "order." And, you'll want to make sure that your project is being supplied by a company that has a professional, process-driven system, ensuring high quality and uniform appearance in all aspects.

Watch Out For "Hidden" Costs

You'll want to be certain that the price you are quoted contains all the elements you'll need, including fasteners, specific coloring and shipping. It is important that you ask about any special needs for your project, so the price quote you receive reflects your true needs. It's equally important to buy from a manufacturer that understands your needs and is prepared to assist you in the planning and purchasing process.

Service After The Sale

Protect yourself, and your project, by making sure your fence material supplier is prepared to offer superior customer service.

Do they offer technical support before and after the sale?

Will they answer installation questions that arise during the project?

Do they offer warranties on their products?

It is important to buy quality material... make sure that quality service is part of the deal.

SAFETY TIPS YOU KNOW

(A REMINDER FROM YOUR FRIENDS AT PAYNE FENCE PRODUCTS)

Check Local Codes

Rules, ordinances and laws are often different as you work in different jurisdictions. Make sure that your work meets the relevant rules and codes in the jurisdiction(s) of your project.

Know Where The Utilities Are

Avoid the danger, delays and the expense of cutting into phone, cable, electric or gas lines when installing a fence. Prepare by allowing time to have utilities and other underground hazards marked before digging.

Use The Right Tools For The Job

There is little substitute for "the right tool for the job." Simple jobs can be difficult, time consuming and unprofitable without the proper tools and equipment. To "do it right the first time," an investment in the right tools will surely pay off.

ADVICE FOR THE FINAL CUSTOMER

Keeping The Fence Looking Great

Just like the paint and finish on a car, a powder-coated Security or Architectural Metal Fence will benefit from a non-abrasive cleaning from time to time. Mild soap and water will help bring back the sparkle to the finish without damaging the fence coating. Recommend to your customers that the fence be washed annually to keep their fence looking new.
