Not All Metal Treatments Are Alike

Most iron fence material is produced in "non-manufacturing" facilities, and will not meet your - or your customer's - expectations. Typically, these fence materials will be painted, with or without primer, and will be prone to fading and rust within a relatively short time. The longevity of these products is drastically reduced and maintenance expense is excessively increased compared to products manufactured with both a galvanization and high-grade powder coating process.

For the highest quality, seek a recognized manufacturer that uses only galvanized steel. One point you'll want to determine is whether the material you are specifying or buying is pre-galvanized or hot dip galvanized.

Hot dipping may result in an uneven surface, producing visual (though not structural) flaws, especially after the material has been color coated. This galvanizing process can provide excellent corrosion protection, but depending on the application, can be overkill.

Pre-galvanized steel provides a more uniform, even surface, giving the finished product a more attractive appearance. This process also allows for better, more efficient color coating, giving the product added protection from environmental conditions that can be harsh on metal structures.

ADVANTAGES OF POWDER-COAT:

Powder-Coat is a superior coating process that provides excellent resistance to weather, impact and corrosion, as well as providing one of the most color-durable quality finishes available.

A wide variety of standard colors are available, and stay bright and vibrant longer than other coatings, such as common liquid applied paints. Custom color selection is virtually unlimited, though this adds to the cost of the fence products.

Powder coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish. The powder used for the process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which is sprayed onto a surface to be coated. The charged powder particles adhere to the electrically grounded surfaces until heated and fused into a smooth coating in a curing oven.

Payne Fence Products is the only metal fence manufacturer to offer an Architectural Grade of Powder Coat that is a modified super-durable polyester, and is available for all fence products. This coating is environmentally sound, plus has the Highest Weatherability and Gloss Retention available

The result is a uniform, durable, high-quality, and attractive finish.

PRODUCT TESTING:

There are a variety of metal coatings and treatments available to the fence purchaser. And, many manufacturers will use ASTM or other testing data to support their coatings and treatments as superior.

Most fence product testing is conducted by independent laboratories, using criteria established through ASTM. It is important to note, however, that different testing scenarios focus on a wide variety of environmental conditions, and are not necessarily related to the conditions of your project.

Salt Spray, for an example, may be a consideration for some fence applications, but a test that focuses only on this environmental element will not take into account UV, wind, and a variety of other elements.

Payne Fence Products undergo lab testing to ensure that we supply our customers with fence materials that will satisfy the needs and expectations of the consumer. Our tests employ "real world" situations - including a variety of weather conditions common to actual fence applications.
